Samanatham is a panchayat village in the Madurai district of Tamil Nadu, just six kilometers from Madurai. The village holds historical significance, linked to tragic events of the 7th century CE. According to local legends, it was the site of a mass killing of Jains who refused to convert to Shaivism after losing a debate to the Shaivite saint, Gnanasambandhar. This event, known as “Samanar Rattham” or “blood of Jains,” took place at ‘Samanar Medu.
Today, Samanatham is home to the Mayandi temple, marked by a 10-foot trident and stone pillars with a hanging bell. The temple’s isolated setting adds to the village’s unique atmosphere. The story of the Jains’ conversion and impalement is commemorated during a festival at the Madurai Meenakshi Amman Temple.
Nearby, visitors can also explore Samanar Malai, a historic hill in Keelakyuilkudi Village. Founded by Jain scholar Akalanka in the 8th century, the hill features:
1. Ancient Tamil-Brahmi inscriptions
2. Carvings of Jain Tirthankaras (including Mahaveer).
3. 300 stairs leading to the top.
4. Significance as a Jain settlement (9th-12th centuries).
Samanatham and Samanar Malai offer a glimpse into the region’s rich history and cultural heritage, making them compelling destinations for those interested in Tamil Nadu’s past.
