One of the oldest epithets for Madurai is Koodal, Confluence of Rivers. River Vaigai skirting the city on the north has its distributary Krithumalai flowing southwest around a holy riverine settlement of Irunthaiyur. The temple settlement which came into existence here was centred on Thirukoodal or Koodal Azhagar Temple, honoured by River Krithumalai, Gracious Garland for Handsome Vishnu. The gracious appearance of Vishnu to Periya Azhwar, as a beautiful gem Manivannan in the temple at the confluence yearned the name Koodal Azhagar Temple. Among the hundred and eight Divinely Realms or Divya Desams of Vishnu, Thirukoodal and Thirumalirunjolai together become a twin pilgrim destination.
Thirukoodal, in the neighbourhood of Madurai Fort of the Pandyan rulers was a fertile settlement under their patronage. Delhi Sultanate invasion necessitated safeguarding of the temple by Vaishnava Acharyar Thiruvaymozhi Pillai. Influenced by his disciple Manavala Munigal the Mavali Vanathirayan chieftains endeavoured to revive worship. Under the governorship of Sadasiva Rayar, Thirukoodal was restored by wealthy donors. Expansion and new fortification by Madurai Nayakkars included Thirukoodal part of Irunthaiyur within the renewed capital city of Madurai.
Parallel competitive temple art forms flowered in the Pallavan and Pandyan kingdoms. Accordingly innovative shrine or Vimanam with three sanctums and a circumambulatory passage each,
one above the other was established in the fertile regions. Irunthaiyur was favourable for Koodal Azhagar to appear In three varying stances: sitting Soundararajar, standing Surya Narayanar and reclining Ksheerabdhi Nathar.
The Vimanam from a square basement, on a pyramid raise with three sanctums, architrave, clerestory was capped by dome and finial. These eight constituents of Ashtanga Vimanam was a unique Dravidian architectural style of the ninth-tenth century. The towers of the enclosure wall were subordinated to the 125ft high Vimanam as prevalent at that time. Prominent 22ft wide circuit dome and 10ft golden finial ensures visibility from distant quarters.
