RAMESHWARAM

 

Rameswaram is a town in Ramanathapuram district in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It is located on Pamban Island separated from mainland India by the Pamban channel and is about 50 kilometres from Mannar Island, Sri Lanka. Pamban Island, also known as Rameswaram Island, is connected to mainland India by the Pamban Bridge. Rameswaram is the terminus of the railway line from Chennai and Madurai. Together with Kashi, it is considered to be one of the holiest places in India to Hindus, and part of the Char Dham pilgrimages. Hence, it is a bustling pilgrim centre. It is situated in the Gulf of Mannar at the very tip of the Indian peninsula. According to legend, this is the place from where Lord Rama built a bridge Ram Setu (also known as Adam's Bridge) across the sea to Lanka to rescue his consort Sita from her abductor Ravana. Both the Vaishnavites and Shaivites visit this pilgrimage centre which is known as the Varanasi of the south. .

 




Dhanushkodi

 

 

Dhanushkodi, the southern tip, was hit by the biggest cyclone of the country in 1964.Kothandarmaswamy temple is the place survived from the cyclone. At present, these area is under the control of Indian Navy and the entry is restricted.

Gandamadhana Parvata

 

 

Gandamadhana Parvata: Situated just outside the Ramanatha temple, the Gandamadhana Parvata has a Mandapam that enshrines footprints of Sri Rama. It offers excellent views of the island.

 

 

The Pamban Bridge

 

 

The Pamban Bridge on the Palk Strait connects Rameswaram to mainland India. It refers to both the road bridge and the cantilever railway bridge, though primarily it means the latter. It is the longest sea bridge in India at a length of about 2.3 km. From the elevated two-lane road bridge, adjoining islands and the parallel rail bridge below can be viewed.The railway bridge is 6,776 ft and was opened for traffic in 1914. The railroad bridge is a still-functioning double-leaf bascule bridge section that can be raised to let ships pass under the bridge. The railway bridge historically carried meter-gauge trains on it, but Indian Railways upgraded the bridge to carry broad-gauge trains in a project that finished Aug. 12, 2007. Until recently, the two leaves of the bridge were opened manually using levers by workers.

Annai indhira gandhi road bridge: It is the longest bridge in southern India. It connects Rameswaram Island to the main land. It's constructed over the bay. It is 7 kms away from Rameshwaram and is also called the Pambam Bridge as it is located beside Pamban, the sacred place where Rama could quench the thirst of Sita by throwing an arrow in the place where they could actually retrieve cool water.

 

 

Beach

 

 

Dhanushkodi beach is quite popular among tourists. Its closeness to town makes it quite visited spot. The serene beach with shallow water here are ideal for swimming and sunbathing.The beach of Rameswaram is famous for its beautiful sea featured with no waves at all. The sea waves rise to a maximum height of 3 cm and the view looks like a very big river. Legend has it that Lord Rama of Ramayana prayed to the sea god to pave the way for Lanka. The sea god granted a boon saying that he will make the sea waves less to aid him in building a rock bridge.

Ramanathaswamy Temple

 

 

As a pristine example of late Dravidian architecture, the Ramanathaswamy temple attracts pilgrims in hordes. This is most renowned for its magnificent corridors lined with massive sculptured pillars that have elaborate design, style and rich carving. According to legends, Rama sanctified this place by worshipping Siva here after the battle of Sri Lanka. Only Hindus are allowed to enter the inner sanctum. An extensive worship of Rama is held during June 15 to July 15 each year.
