Overview
St George’s Church Madurai is the one of the Oldest Protestant Church in Madurai built in the late 18th Century
St. George’s Church located in the heart of the city at Main Guard Square was established in 1800 by Rev. Father George Fredrik Fisher (European). Originally a small building, the church was rebuilt with the passage of time and was consecrated in 1881. It is also known as ‘Stone Church’ since it is made of black stones. The graves of Rouse Peter and George Frederick Fisher, Zamindar of Salem, are located inside the church.
The stone architecture and the colorful stained glass windows are much appreciated by the visitors.
Getting there
It is located in West Hanumantharayan Street which is walkable distance from Meenakshi Temple. Since its a very narrow road and traffic advisable to use a Autorickshaw or a chauffer driven car.
