Echoes of Tradition in Tranquil
The origins of Aritapatti date back to -BC. It is known for its Jain caves with brahmi inscriptions.
It is the only biodiversity heritage site of Tamilnadu and comprises a chain of seven barren hillocks with a spring and rock shelters.
This village, located 24 km from Madurai and 3 km from Narasingapatti on the Madurai to Melur Road, is a significant heritage site in the Madurai District. It boasts a history and archaeological evidence spanning over 2000 years. Notable heritage assets include a 2nd-century Brahmi inscription in a natural Jain cave, an 8th-century Pandya rock-cut temple, and a 13th-century structured temple with stone inscriptions from the late Pandya period. Arittapatti is also known for its rich biodiversity, with more than 52 water bodies.
Traditionally an agricultural village specializing in the cultivation of paddy and vegetables, Arittapatti residents continue to prepare their traditional food outdoors, under the sun, which is believed to contribute to their robust immunity.
